What a great thread! Aurifil 40 is the medium weight of the three main Aurifil cotton two-ply threads. It is so versatile it is a great thread for any general sewing project. It can be used for piecing and for quilting, by hand and by machine.
Aurifil Cotton Mako 40 thread is a medium weight (40 weight) 2 ply thread made from the finest Egyptian long staple cotton and mercerised for a wonderful sheen. Aurifil 40 is a fantastic general purpose thread and is very popular with long-arm quilters because of its smooth character and its ability to be run at high speeds through machines without breaking.
Aurifil 40 is ideal for machine quilting, machine embroidery, dressmaking, lacemaking, decorative applique and many general sewing uses. Although some patchworkers prefer Aurifil 50 when piecing (they like the thinner thread for piecing) Aurifil 40 is versatile and can be used for patchwork piecing too. Aurifil 40 is thinner than Aurifil 28 but still has sufficient definition when you want the stitches to show.
Like all Aurifil cottons, Aurifil 40 is a very smooth thread with very little lint and virtually no slub. It behaves extremely well through sewing machines and is easy to work with by hand. The colour is both light (UV) and wash fast. For machine quilting, we recommend using a Schmetz Quilting 75 or Quilting 90 needle. If piecing with this thread, we recommend using a Schmetz Microtex 80 needle.
Aurifil 40 Aurifil thread is supplied on a green spool holding 30g of thread (equal to 1000m of thread).
